Why use Cloth Diapers?
An entire generation has grown up
believing that a "disposable diaper" is the only thing you put on a
babies' bottom. This is a "single-use" plastic item you get in huge
bags at the store, and toss then into the trash when they're dirty.
The name "disposable diaper"
is a misnomer. These items are definitely NOT disposable. We throw over 20
billion of them away each year, believing they've gone to some magic place where
they disappear. THE TRUTH IS most end up in the landfills. There they sit,
tightly wrapped bundles of urine & feces that partially and slowly
decompose over many centuries (basically forever ....). What started out as a
convenience product has become a solid-waste nightmare of squandered material
resources, sky-rocketing economics and a growing health hazard, set against the
backdrop of dwindling landfill capacity.
Its time to re-think our
diapering choices ...
Since your baby must be diapered for
the first years (about 22,000 hours) of it's life, lets look at some facts in
the following 3 areas:
Baby's Health....
Cloth diapers help prevent rashes. They
tend to be changed more frequently ("clean" not "dry" helps
prevent rashes) and they "breathe". (Allowing air to contact the
babies skin)
"Single use" diapers have
chemicals in them that many health advocates believe to be unsafe.
Environment....
There is ONLY one reusable and
recyclable diaper ....... Cloth!
Statistics from two studies (funded by
disposable diaper companies) show that "single use" diapers actually
use "20 times more raw material, 3 times more energy and generate 60
times more solid waste" than do cloth diapers.
Each baby will generate over 1 ton of
"single use" diapers in his/her diapering period. Considering these
diapers will be there for about 500 years causes a serious landfill overload.
Leachate containing viruses from human
feces (including viruses from childhood immunizations) can leak into the earth
and pollute underground water supplies. In addition, airborne viruses carried by
flies & other insects contribute to an unhealthy and unsanitary situation.
Cost....
The most economical way to diaper your
baby is to wash your own at home. This method takes a lot of time and effort.
There is virtually no difference in
cost between using "single use" diapers and a diaper service. Both
methods are very convenient. However, a baby in cloth diapers will train about 6
months sooner than in a "single use" diaper, thus saving hundreds of
dollars.
Think about it
-- 8,000 or more "single use" diapers or a few dozen cloth diapers and
some covers.
Summary....
Since it doesn't cost any more to use a
diaper service (probably less), and cloth is better & safer for your baby and the
environment ........
Why Not use
Cloth? Why Not use a Diaper Service?
Your Families Future will be
cleaner and healthier!
